A Practical Monsoon Cleaning Checklist for Dhaka Homes

Dhaka humidity between June and September regularly sits above eighty percent. At that level mould does not need a leak — condensation on a cool wall is enough. Monsoon cleaning is therefore less about dirt and more about moisture control.

Before the rains

• Clear balcony and roof drains completely. A single blocked outlet causes most monsoon water damage in Dhaka flats.
• Check window seals and channels. Clean channels drain properly; clogged ones push water inward across the sill.
• Service the bathroom exhaust fans. A fan clogged with dust moves almost no air, and bathroom humidity then spreads through the whole flat.
• Deep clean and fully dry all fabric furniture. Damp upholstery entering the monsoon will smell by August.
• Treat existing mould in grout and silicone with a fungicide rather than bleach — bleach removes the colour, not the organism.
• Check the roof and terrace for pooling points that will become mosquito breeding sites within a week of the first rain.

During the monsoon

• Wipe condensation from windows and cold walls rather than letting it run down and soak the paint line.
• Run fans and open windows on dry days, even for an hour. Air movement matters more than temperature.
• Keep wardrobes slightly open and use silica or charcoal absorbers. Clothing mould is common and hard to reverse.
• Dry mop rather than wet mop. Floors that never fully dry keep the whole room humid.
• Check under sinks and behind the fridge weekly. Slow leaks hide there and announce themselves as a smell.
• Empty and scrub plant trays, buckets and water drums every few days — these are the classic dengue breeding sites.

After the rains

Once humidity drops, do a full reset: fabric extraction on sofas and mattresses, carpet washing, wardrobe emptying and wiping, air-conditioner filter and coil cleaning, and repainting anywhere the paint has bubbled. This is the single best time of year for a professional deep clean, because the results actually hold rather than being undone by the next humid week.

Where professional help is genuinely worth it

Fabric extraction and mould treatment are the two jobs where domestic effort rarely succeeds. Household cleaning cannot pull moisture and spores out of upholstery, and surface-treated mould returns within weeks. Everything else on this list is doable yourself with a little discipline — and doing it will save you the bigger bill later.
